Choosing shutters shouldn’t feel like a giant puzzle. But we know how it goes — you Google one thing, end up on a forum from 2011, watch a YouTube video that makes you more confused, and suddenly you’re knee-deep in arguments about blinds vs curtains.
So, we’ve put together the answers to the questions we get every single week, straight from the van, the living rooms, and the kitchen tables of Leyton.
No jargon. Just the real answers from Nick and Pete who fit shutters for a living.
“Are shutters actually worth it?”
Yes. And not because we sell them — because we see what they do to a room the moment they go in. Privacy, insulation, tidiness, proper darkness, clean lines… they’re one of those upgrades that genuinely change how a space feels.
Most people tell us the same thing after installation: “Should’ve done this years ago.”
“Do shutters help keep my home warm?”
They do — especially solid shutters or full-height ones. Old East London sash windows are charming… until winter hits. Shutters act like a second barrier, keeping draughts out and warmth in.
You still need heating, obviously. But shutters do make a noticeable difference.
“How long do shutters last?”
A long time. We fit hardwood shutters designed to last decades when cared for properly. They won’t sag like blinds, they won’t fade quickly, and they certainly don’t go out of style.
We’ve revisited homes 8–10 years later and the shutters still look spot on.
“Blinds or shutters — what’s better?”
Blinds are fine. Shutters are better.
And here’s why:
They’re sturdier
They’re easier to clean
They look built-in
They offer better privacy
They add value to your home
They’re not rattling around in a breeze
Curtains + shutters together? Lovely combo. Blinds + shutters? Works well when you need a blackout.
“Can I get shutters for bay windows?”

Absolutely — and they look unbelievable on Victorian and Edwardian bays.
This is the most popular window style we fit across Leyton, Leytonstone, and Walthamstow. They give you privacy, style, and an instant upgrade.
If you’ve got a bay window, shutters are basically their soulmate.
“How long does installation take?”
For a standard home:
1 fitting in the morning
Sometimes 2 consultations in the afternoon
Each fitting is usually a few hours depending on the job
We’re in, we’re tidy, we’re quiet, and we’re out. Our record for “cleanest room left behind” is strong — we take pride in that.
“Do shutters work in bathrooms or kitchens?”

Yep — just choose the right material.
We use water-resistant shutters for humid rooms like kitchens and bathrooms so they don’t warp or swell. They look incredible and they’re easy to wipe down if life gets a bit… splashy.
“What colours can I get?”
More than people think.
Most go for white, but the brave ones? They choose colours like:
charcoal
deep french blue
sage
warm beige
soft nudes
natural wood tones
We’ve actually seen coloured shutters become a bit of an East London trend.
“How much do shutters cost?”
Every home is different, and not in a vague salesy way — literally in size, shape, window wonkiness, and layout.
The best way to get an accurate price is for the lads to come out, take proper measurements, and talk through what you actually need.
No pressure. No weird upselling. Just proper advice.
“How do you clean shutters?”
Easy.
Feather duster
Microfibre cloth
No chemicals
Quick wipe every few weeks
That’s it. No dismantling. No complicated cleaning routines.
“Can I try shutters before committing?”
Well… you can’t really. But you can book a free design consultation.
We bring samples, colours, ideas, and the tape measure. You tell us what you’re thinking, we tell you what will actually work.
Simple as that.
